Andrews Theater

The Joint Base Andrews’ Safety Office presents the 9th Annual Motorcycle Safety Day. It will be at the motorcycle training pad across from the base theater. Registration and opening comments start at 8, and the event will end at 1445. Questions and concerns may be directed

to MSgt Morris, Harold at harold.r.morris4.mil@mail.mil, or DSN 612-6380.

On June 21, from 0900-1200 on Spokane Lane, across from the Youth Center, Operation K*I*D MODE will take place allowing military children to see what their service members do when they deploy. The event includes K9 and EOD demos, Fire and Ambulance displays, a performance from the USAF Honor Guard and a helicopter display. For more information, check out the flyer here.

To show appreciation for those who serve in the U.S. Military, Greenbelt Park reminds military families that the National Park Service offers an annual pass offering free entrance to all national parks for active duty military members and their dependents. Greenbelt Park rangers have visited our local military installations in the past two years and will continue to reach out to Joint Base Andrews in suburban Maryland to distribute military passes. Our next visit to Joint Base Andrews will be Wednesday, June 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the BX/Food Court.

JBA Pool Closure

As summer approaches, many patrons will be looking to cool off at a local pool. After careful evaluation of costs and benefits, we decided not to open the Joint Base Andrews pool and to keep it closed permanently. Each year, an average of $200,000 and 950 man-hours is spent on major repairs and maintenance just to make it safe to open. Additionally, an average of 30 people per day, and 65 people during peak periods such as holidays and weekends, used the pool in 2018. These attendance numbers, coupled with the wide variety of alternative swimming locations available in other communities, do not support continued investment of limited resources.

Our Liberty Park residents are welcome to continue use of the Liberty Park pool and their new patio area adjacent to it.

For those who do not reside on base, other local options in the area include several pools run by Prince George County Parks and Recreation. These include but are not limited to:

Allentown Splash, Tennis & Fitness Park

7210 Allentown Road

Fort Washington, MD  20744

5 miles from base

Bickford Natatorium

301 Largo Road

Largo, MD  20774

9 miles from base

North Barnaby Splash Park

5000 Wheeler Road

Oxon Hill, MD

10 miles from base
